Theology (Catholic Definition
Faith seeking understanding
(what the church believes, why it believes, what can be known about God)
Advent
The first season of the liturgical year in which we anticipate Christ's coming.
Ordinary Time
The season (that happens twice) of the liturgical year that balance the extraordinary times of the year (Christmas, Lent, etc.) and give us time to reflect on Jesus' life, ministry, and teachings.
Lent
Begins with Ash Wednesday and is modeled after Jesus' 40 days in the desert before his begins his public ministry. This is also a time of preparing ourselves for Holy Week and Easter.
Contemplative Prayer
is the "listening" part of the conversation we have with God in prayer. This is also the most important and intense time of prayer.
Servant of God
The first formal step in the process of canonization. This is a person whose life has begun to be studied by the Holy See to determine if they ought to be canonized.
Blessed
The third step is where a miracle from intercession has occurred. Many people weigh in on whether this was natural or a true miracle.
Chalice
a cup made of precious metal to hold the wine, mixed with water, which will become the blood of Christ
Genuflect
Paying respect by getting down on your right knee and making the sign of the cross when you enter or exit a church.
Tabernacle
Locked container where the Eucharist is reserved.
Roman Missal
The book containing the prescribed prayers and instructions for celebration of Mass in the Roman Catholic Church.
Palm Sunday
the Sunday before Good Friday when Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey
Pontious Pilate
The Roman procurator of Judea who ordered that Jesus be crucified
Common Good
Social conditions that allow ALL people to reach their fulfillment
Solidarity
The Christian virtue of social charity and friendship
Reason
to think, understand, and form judgments by a process of logic
Faith

Triduum
Begins on the evening of Holy Thursday and lasts until the evening of Easter Sunday. In these "three days," we, intensely, encounter the Paschal Mystery (Christ's living, dying, and rising).
Easter
This season begins with the most important liturgy of the year. We celebrate Jesus' resurrection from the dead.
Vocal Prayer
spoken prayer. Having a conversation with God out loud or praying as a community
Meditative Prayer
involves concentrating on some spiritual topic. It is a kind of quest where the mind seeks to understand the why and how of the Christian life.
Venerable
the second step in the canonization of a saint where the Vatican decides whether the person is worthy
Saint
A second miracle must be found to have occurred.

Paten
a plate made of precious metal-silver or gold, and it hold the bread that will become the body of Christ
Ciborium
A vessel used to hold the Eucharistic hosts. It usually has a lid for storage in the tabernacle.
Procession
It signifies the beginning of Mass with the entrance of the priest and ministers. It signifies the pilgrim Church, the body of those who believe in Christ, on their way to Heavenly Jerusalem.
Lector
Person who reads the first reading, responsorial psalm, alleluia, and second reading.

A Hebrew word meaning "place of the skull," referring to the place where Jesus was crucified.
Conscience
an inner feeling or voice viewed as acting as a guide to the rightness or wrongness of one's behavior.
