immune system
-divided into innate and adaptive
-both work together to kill pathogens and destroy damaged cells
organs and tissues of IS
-bone barrow: considered main organ b/c it makes all immune cells
-thymus: necessary for T lymphocytes to become mature/functional
-lymph nodes: act as filters/traps
-spleen: basically large lymph node that does blood filtering
-tonsils/adenoids: first line of defense
-liver: makes important proteins to be used
barrier system
-first step in fighting infection
-barrier as to not allow entry (ex: skin)
-tears, saliva, urine also part of barrier system
inflammatory response
-1st thing is acute inflammatory response: pain redness, warmth, loss of function, and swelling
innate immune system cells
-defense against pathogens called phagocytes
adaptive immune system
-have specific responses to an infection
-plasma cells make antibodies (ex: immunoglobulins)
-T cells important during cellular immunity
-when you get an infection, you have active immunity and passing it onto baby is passive immunity (temporary)
