Buccal
The surface of a tooth that faces the cheek. It’s usually used to describe the outer side of back teeth.
Lingual
The surface of a tooth that faces the tongue. It’s the inner side of the teeth, mostly used for lower teeth.
Facial
The surface of a tooth that faces the front or the lips. It includes both the cheek (buccal) side and the lip (labial) side of the teeth.
Medial
The surface of a tooth that faces toward the front middle line of the mouth. It’s the side of the tooth closest to the center between your two front teeth.
Distal
The surface of a tooth that faces away from the middle of the mouth. It’s the side of the tooth farthest from the center between your front teeth.
