Wood Carving

A technique encompassing any form of working wood with a tool into some sort of aesthetic object.

Molding

A technique of shaping liquid or pliable material such as clay, used in traditional Philippine pottery making.

Weaving

A method of textile production in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads are interlaced at right angles to form a fabric or cloth.

Basketry Methods

The four different types of basketry methods: coiling, plaiting, wickering, and twining.

Artistic Skills

Abilities possessed by artists who operate within a fine art capacity to express and communicate feelings and ideas through mediums.

Medium

The material, or the substance out of which a work of art is made.

Technique

The way artists use and manipulate materials to achieve the desired formal effect and communicate meaning according to their personal style.

Collage

A technique of art production in visual arts where the artwork is made from an assemblage of different forms (such as magazine clippings, paints, paper, or found objects) to create a new whole.

Decollage

An artistic technique created by cutting, tearing away, or otherwise removing pieces of an original image; derived from the French word meaning 'Take-off', 'To become Unglued', or 'To become unstuck'.

Graffiti

Writings or drawings that have been scribed, scratched, or painted illicitly on a wall or other surface, often in a public space.

Land Art

An art movement and art form in which the landscape and the work of art are inextricably linked, created in nature using natural materials and introduced materials.

Digital Arts

An artistic work or practice that uses digital technology as an essential part of the creative or presentation process.

Mixed Media

A work of visual art that combines various traditionally distinct visual arts, such as paint, ink, and collage on canvas.

Print Making

The process of making artworks by transferring ink from a matrix or through a prepared screen to a sheet of paper or another surface.

Frottage

The technique of rubbing with crayon on a piece of paper placed over an object or image to capture its impression.

Decalcomania

The process of applying gouache to paper or glass then transferring a reversal of the image onto canvas or other flat materials.

Decoupage

An art technique done by adhering cut-outs of paper to an object and coating them with one or more transparent layers of varnish.

Eggshell mosaic

An artistic technique that uses tiny parts of eggshell to create a whole image or object.

Trapunto painting

A technique used by Pacita Abad where canvases are padded, sewn, and filled with sequins, beads, shells, buttons, tiny mirrors, bits of glass, rickrack, and textile swatches.

Local Materials

Defined by Timothy O. Adekunle and Tomothy 'Seyi Odeyale as resources that can be found readily in large quantity at a particular location or area at a certain time.

Cogon

Also known as 'Kogon', a perennial weed growing in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija with rigid leaves up to 6 feet long and 1 inch wide, used for hut roofs, baskets, and bags.

Bamboo

A very tall grass characterized by a jointed stem called a culm.

Water Hyacinth

A free-floating perennial herb in the water lily family, growing 10-20 cm high (up to 1 m), found in water creeks, lakes, ponds, and rivers.

Buri

Also known as Buli, it is the tallest palm tree in the Philippines, featuring a big leaf with a strong stem.

Coconut Tree

Also known as 'buko' or the 'tree of life', a palm family plant that grows up to 25 meters with long leaves, a fibrous husk, and a big-hard fruit.

Corn Husks

The non-edible light tan or soft white leaves on the outer part of corn's ear, dyed and woven to craft artificial flowers, bags, placemats, and dolls.

Tambo

A coarse erect grass growing 1.5 to 3.5 meters high with hollow stems about 1 centimeter in diameter, used extensively in San Antonio, Nueva Ecija to make 'walis tambo'.

Sabutan

A rare plant in the pandan family with strong fiber used medicinally and woven into baskets, mats, hats, placemats, and bags.

Rattan

A palm family plant growing wildly in Aurora Province whose skin is peeled for weaving and core is used to make furniture.

Nito

A species of climbing fern growing in uplands, abundantly produced in Aurora Province to craft baskets, mats, coasters, and box containers.

Nipa

A plant growing in soft-mud areas in Aurora province used for weaving baskets, placemats, suman wrappers, hats, raincoats, and thatched roofing.

Shells

Abundant natural materials in ocean-surrounded Aurora Province used to make wind chimes, accessories, and decorative frames, bowls, and vases.

Abaca

Also known as Musa textilis, a tropical plant in the banana family growing up to 6 meters and living up to 10 years, woven into bags, carpets, clothes, furniture, and ropes.
