Assitin with using bedpan

Step by Step

Step One

Gather needed supplies: gloves, bed protetor, toliet paper, bedpan, bedpan cover (or paper towels) perineal care suppleis, washcloth, towel

Step 2

Complete the “Getting Ready” steps. (WEAVERS)

Step 3

Make sure the bed wheels are loked and adjust the bed to a comfortable working height.Lower thh ehead of the bed as tolerated.

step 4

If the side rails are in use, lower the side rail onthe wroking side of the bed. The side rail on the oppsoite side of the bed should reamin up.

Step 5

perform hand hygiene and put on gloves

step 6

Fan fold the top linens and adust the person’s gown or clothing to expose the buttocks. Put the bed protector on the bed.

Step 7

Place the bedpan underneath the person’s buttocks by either helping the person to lie on their side, faing away from you, or by asking the eprson to bend thheir knees, press their heels into the mattress, and lift their buttock

Step 8 (STARRED IMPORTANT !!!)

Slide the bedpan underneath the perosn (if they are lifting their buttocks off the mattress) or place the bedpan against their buttocks and help them to roll back onto it while you hold ilt hhe bedpan aginst their buttocks

Step 9

Raise the head of the bed as tolerated. hek the palcement of the bedpan. Cover the eprson with the bed linens

Step 10

Make sure toliet paper and the all light are within reach

Step 11

Leave the person if safe to do so. Ask the person to all whe they are finished. Remove glvoes and wash hands.

Return when the person singals. Remember to knock before entering

step 13

lower the head of the bed. Put on gloves

step 14

Fanfold the top linenes to the bottom of the bed

Step 15 (STARRED IMPORTANT!!!)

ask the person to bend their knees, press their heels into the matttress and lifetheir buttocks so that you can remove the bedpan. and bed protector, help the person roll on their side, facinga way form you, while you hold the bedpan securly in palce aginst the mattress to prevent the contents from spilling. Remove the bedpan and bed protector andt hen help the person rollback.

If neessary, help the person use the toliet paper or provide perinealcare as needed, remove gloves and perfom hand hygiene.

step 17

Help the person back into a comfortabl position, straighten the bottom lienes, and draw the top linene over the person. Return the bed so its lowest position, and raise the side rails if used.

step 18

put glovs on.Cover the bedpan with the cover or papers towels, carry to the bathroom.

step 19

if the person is on intake and output stauts, measure the urnine, not the color, amount and quality of the feces before emptying it into the toliet. If anytng unsual is observed, do not empty th ebedpan in the toliet, until a nurse has looked at the contents.

step 20

Clean and disenfietant bedpan acording to facility poliy. Return to the storage area

step 21

gather solied linenes and pale in the hamper if neesary. Dispose of trsh in the appropriate container.

step 22

Remove & dispose of loves. perosn hand hygiene.

step 23

complete the finsihing up” steps. (also Wash & document)
