pH
A measure of the acidity or basicity of a solution, defined as the negative logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen ions (H3O+).
pOH
A measure of the basicity of a solution, defined as the negative logarithm of the concentration of hydroxide ions (OH−).
pH Scale
A logarithmic scale used to specify the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution, ranging from 0 to 14.
Water's pH at 25°C
The pH of pure water at 25 degrees Celsius is 7, indicating a neutral solution.
Acidic Solution
A solution with a pH less than 7, having an excess of H3O+ ions.
Basic Solution
A solution with a pH greater than 7, having an excess of OH− ions.
Relationship of pH and pOH
pH + pOH = 14 at 25°C.
Logarithmic Nature of pH
Each unit change in pH represents a tenfold change in acidity.
Hydronium Ion ([H3O+])
A water molecule (H2O) that has an extra proton, forming H3O+; it indicates acidity in a solution.
Hydroxide Ion ([OH−])
A negatively charged ion formed by the removal of a proton from water (H2O); it indicates basicity in a solution.
