Human Participant (CFR 45, CFR 46)

A living individual about whom an investigator conducting research obtains data or samples through intervention/interaction or identifiable private information.

Institutional Review Board (IRB)

The body that must review and approve student research involving human participants before any interaction, such as recruitment or data collection, begins.

Minors

Students under $18$ years of age who, in many cases, must provide informed consent/assent and receive parental permission to participate in research.

Data Privacy Act of 2012

An example of a privacy law that research studies must comply with when applicable to the project.

Qualified Scientist

A professional required by the instrument publisher to administer, score, and interpret all published instruments not in the public domain.

Vertebrate Animals

A category including all nonhuman vertebrates at hatching or birth, mammalian embryos/fetuses, tadpoles, bird/reptile eggs starting $72$ hours prior to hatching, and cephalopods.

Zebra fish (Vertebrate Classification)

Considered vertebrate animals once they are past $7$ days ($168$ hours) post-fertilization due to delayed cognitive neural development.

Scientific Review Committee (SRC)

The body that serves in an approval capacity for vertebrate animal studies performed in a school, home, or field, and must include a veterinarian or animal care provider.

Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

The institutional animal oversight review and approval body for all animal studies conducted at a Regulated Research Institution (RRI).

Food or Fluid Restriction (Animal Research)

An experimental design requiring justification that must be approved by an IACUC and conducted at an RRI if the restriction exceeds $18$ hours.

Maximum Permissible Weight Loss

A limit of $15\%$ weight loss or growth retardation compared to controls, monitored through weekly weight recordings.

Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1)

A laboratory rating for research that must be supervised by a trained Direct Supervisor or Qualified Scientist and follow standard microbiological practices.

Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2)

A laboratory rating required for studies involving multidrug resistant organisms (MDROs), human/animal waste, harmful algal blooms, or vector-borne pathogens.

Autoclave Disposal Standards

For BSL 1 or BSL 2 organisms, the process of heating at $121$ degrees Celsius for $20$ minutes.

Hazardous Activities

Activities that involve a level of risk above and beyond that encountered in the student's everyday life.

GHS and NFPA Ratings (School/Lab Setting)

Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

Documents that outline specific disposal procedures and standard lab practices for chemical handling, safety, and ventilation.
