Chemical Reaction
A process in which one or more substances, called reactants, are transformed into new substances called products with different properties from the original materials.
Reactants
The original substances that undergo a transformation during a chemical reaction.
Products
The new substances formed during a chemical reaction that possess different properties from the reactants.
Physical Change
A change where the substance only changes in form, size, or state, but its composition remains the same and no new substance is formed.
Chemical Change
A change that forms a new substance with different properties and is typically irreversible.
Precipitate
A solid that forms when two liquid solutions are mixed, indicating that a chemical reaction has occurred.
Gas Formation
An indicator of a chemical reaction often observed as bubbling or fizzing, such as when vinegar is mixed with baking soda.
Color Change
An indicator of a chemical reaction when it results from the formation of a new substance, such as iron rusting or an apple turning brown.
Odor Change
A sign of a chemical reaction that occurs when a new substance with a different smell is produced, such as spoiled milk.
Temperature Change
An indicator of a chemical reaction where heat is either released or absorbed as a new substance is formed.
Irreversible
A characteristic of most chemical reactions meaning the original substances cannot easily be changed back once a new substance is formed.
Rusting
A chemical reaction where a shiny metal slowly changes color into reddish-brown and becomes rough over time.
Dissolving
A physical change where a substance like salt or sugar is mixed in water and disappears, forming a clear solution without creating a new material.
Indicators of Chemical Change
Visible clues such as color change, gas production, formation of a precipitate, release of heat or light, and change in smell or state.
