About 50% of the country is less than 10m above sea level. 20 million people live in areas less than 1m above sea level. Tropical cyclones cause storm surges, and monsoon rains increase amount of floodwater.

Fertile farmland is increasingly short supply, meaning that people are clearing mangrove forests, which act as natural flood defences.
