Chromosome
A long strand of DNA that carries genes.
Interphase
The phase before mitosis where the cell undergoes normal life and DNA is duplicated.
Chromatin
The loose form of DNA plus proteins before it condenses into chromosomes.
Sister Chromatids
The duplicated sides of a chromosome that are kept together at the centromere.
Centromere
The region that holds sister chromatids together.
Telomeres
Nucleotide sequences at the ends of chromosomes that protect them from degradation.
Prophase
The phase of mitosis where the nuclear envelope breaks down and chromatin condenses into chromosomes.
Metaphase
The stage of mitosis where spindle fibers line up chromosomes along the center of the cell.
Anaphase
The phase of mitosis where sister chromatids are pulled apart towards opposite poles of the cell.
Telophase
The stage where the nuclear envelope reforms and chromosomes uncoil.
Cytokinesis
The process where the cytoplasm divides, resulting in two daughter cells.
Mitosis
A type of cell division that results in two identical daughter nuclei.
Cell Plate
A structure that forms in plant cells during cytokinesis, made by the Golgi apparatus.
Spindle Fibers
Structures that attach to chromosomes to help pull them apart during mitosis.
Nucleolus
A structure within the nucleus that disappears during prophase.
Organelles
Cell structures that are duplicated during the interphase in preparation for cell division.
Single Celled Organisms
Organisms that use cell division to reproduce.
Multicellular Organisms
Organisms that use cell division for growth, development, and repair.
G1 Phase
The first phase of interphase where the cell grows and prepares for DNA replication.
Cell Division
The process of a parent cell dividing into two or more daughter cells.
