Inflammation

A biological response to harmful stimuli, including pathogens and damaged cells.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

An autoimmune disease characterized by the immune system attacking healthy tissues, leading to inflammation and damage in various body parts.

Cardinal signs of inflammation

The four classic signs are redness, heat, swelling, and pain.

Phagocytosis

The process by which certain cells, like neutrophils and macrophages, engulf and digest microorganisms and cellular debris.

Innate immunity

The nonspecific defense mechanisms present at birth that provide immediate response to pathogens.

Adaptive immunity

A specific immune response that develops over time, involving T cells and B cells.

Antinuclear antibodies (ANAs)

Autoantibodies targeting substances within the nucleus, commonly elevated in lupus.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

An autoimmune disorder that primarily affects joints, leading to inflammation and potential joint deformity.

C-reactive protein (CRP)

A blood test marker for inflammation, which is often elevated in autoimmune diseases.

Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs)

Medications used to slow the progression of rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune conditions.
