Selection process
1) CC official responsible for summoning enough jurors to try cases
2) the official arranges for the names to be selected at random from electoral register
3) more than 12 will be summoned in case of disqualification
4) those summoned must notify the court if they can’t attend
5) all other summoned should attend court. Trials usually 2 weeks.
Vetting
Once a list of potential jurors is know, both prosecution and defence have a right to see the list.
They can be vetted in two forms: DBS, and Authorised Jury Check
DBS: simple background check
AJC: more extended to political affiliations and such following ABC trial
Challenging
before jurors are sworn in, both parties can challenge legitimacy of jurors in 3 ways:
1) To the array - s5 Juries Act; jury is biased or unrepresentative (Romford Jury in Old Bailey)
2) For cause - challenging individuals right to be on jury (disqualified)
3) Prosecution right to stand by - put a juror on the end of a jury list as a reserve
Appointment
Then jurors are to swear an oath that they will faithfully try the defendant according to the evidence
