Name of alkanes (1 - 6)

Prefixes

Halogen substituents

Short chain names

CH3 = Methyl
CH2 & CH3 = Ethyl
CH2 & CH2 & CH3 = Propyl
CH3 & CH & CH3 = Isopropyl

Alcohol naming

Contains ol, needs to have the lowest number.

Aldehyde naming

Drop the e and and al to the end

Ketone naming

Drop the e and add 'one'

Carboxylic acids naming

Drop the e and add ‘-oic acid'

Naming ethers

The alkoxy group (smallest group + O atom) = prefix + oxy

Alkane stem (largest group) is alkane name.

e.g. ethoxyethane

Primary amines naming

Name like normal but with amine at the end.
e.g. Propan-1-amine, propan-2-amine, butan-2-amine

Secondary amines naming

Put an "N" in front of name and the short chain that is attached to it and add amine to the end
e.g. N-methylpropanamine, N-ethylpropanamine

Tertiary amines naming

Put two "N" in the front of the name and add amine to the end
e.g. N,N-dimethylmethanamine

Double bonds (alkene) naming

End with -ene

Triple bond (Alkynes) naming

end with -yne
