Communis
The Latin origin of 'communication' which means 'to make common'.
Sender
The person or group who possesses an idea and initiates the communication process.
Encoding
The process of converting a message into an understandable form such as words, images, or body language.
Decoding
The process where the receiver interprets a message to understand its intended meaning.
Feedback
The receiver's response or reaction that indicates whether the message was understood.
Noise
Anything that interferes with a message; it can be internal (thoughts) or external (loud sounds).
7 C's of Communication
The principles of Clarity, Coherence, Confidence, Concrete, Correctness, Conciseness, and Courtesy.
Potter Box
A four-step ethical decision-making framework: Define situation, Identify values, Select principles, and Choose loyalties.
TARES Test
An ethical evaluation tool that checks for Truthfulness, Authenticity, Respect, Equity, and Social responsibility.
Deontological
An ethical framework where one follows moral rules or duties, such as honesty, regardless of the outcome.
Virtue Ethics
A framework focusing on good character traits such as compassion, integrity, and courage.
Globalization
The interconnection of countries allowing the spread of information, products, technology, and jobs across borders.
Intercultural Communication
The sharing of information across different cultures and social groups including religion, ethnicity, and education.
Power Distance
A cultural dimension regarding how much a society accepts hierarchy, authority, and inequality.
Individualism
A cultural orientation focusing on the self and personal goals, valuing independence and self-expression.
Collectivism
A cultural orientation focusing on the group and community, valuing loyalty and harmony over personal disagreement.
Uncertainty Avoidance
A cultural dimension describing a society's comfort level with the unknown, change, and risk.
High Context
A communication style where meaning is implicit and 'read between the lines' based on tone and gestures.
Ethnocentrism
The belief that one's own culture is superior to all others and using one's own standards to judge other cultures.
Stereotyping
A fixed, oversimplified, and often false belief applied to every person within a group.
Prejudice
A negative attitude or emotional reaction (like fear or dislike) toward a group based on little experience.
Discrimination
The action of treating people unfairly or excluding them based on stereotypes and prejudice.
Transpection
An improvement technique for intercultural communication that involves pausing and empathizing to see things from another's perspective.
Inner Circle
In Kachru's Three Circles Model, the group that is 'Norm-Providing' where English is the native language, such as the UK and USA.
Outer Circle
In Kachru's Three Circles Model, the 'Norm-Developing' group where English is an official or second language, such as India or the Philippines.
Expanding Circle
In Kachru's Three Circles Model, the 'Norm-Dependent' group where English is a foreign language, such as China, Brazil, or Japan.
