Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)
The total weight of a single vehicle plus its load.
Gross Combination Weight (GCW)
The total weight of a powered unit, plus trailer(s), plus the cargo.
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)
The maximum GVW specified by the manufacturer for a single vehicle plus its load.
Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR)
The maximum GCW specified by the manufacturer for a specific combination of vehicles plus its load.
Axle Weight
The weight transmitted to the ground by one axle or one set of axles.
Tire Load
The maximum safe weight a tire can carry at a specified pressure. This rating is stated on the side of each tire.
Suspension Systems
Suspension systems have a manufacturer's weight capacity rating.
Coupling Device Capacity
Coupling devices are rated for the maximum weight they can pull and/or carry.
Blocking (for cargo)
Used in the front, back, and/or sides of a piece of cargo to keep it from sliding.
Bracing (for cargo)
Used to prevent movement of cargo, extending from the upper part of the cargo to the floor and/or walls of the cargo compartment.
Header Boards ("headache racks")
Front-end structures that protect the driver from cargo in case of a crash or emergency stop.
Dry Bulk Tanks
Vehicles that require special care due to a high center of gravity and the potential for a shifting load.
Hanging Meat
A very unstable load in a refrigerated truck with a high center of gravity, requiring particular caution on sharp curves.
Livestock (as cargo)
Can move around in a trailer, causing unsafe handling; false bulkheads may be used with less than a full load to keep livestock bunched together.
Oversized Loads
Over-length, over-width, and/or overweight loads that require special transit permits and often special equipment or escorts.
Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT)
Products that pose a risk to health, safety, and property during transportation.
HMR (Hazardous Materials Regulations)
Federal regulations found in parts 100 - 185 of title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, governing the handling of hazardous materials.
Hazard Class
The category of hazard assigned to a hazardous material, reflecting the risks associated with it.
Shipping Paper
A document (e.g., shipping order, bill of lading, manifest) that describes the hazardous materials being transported.
Package Labels
Diamond-shaped hazard warning labels shippers put on most hazardous materials packages to inform others of the hazard.
Placards
Signs put on the outside of a vehicle and on bulk packages that identify the hazard class of the cargo; a placarded vehicle must have at least four identical placards.
Identification Numbers (HAZMAT)
A four-digit code used by first responders to identify hazardous materials, preceded by 'UN' or 'NA' on shipping papers and packages.
Hazardous Materials Table (49 CFR 172.101)
A list that includes shipping names, hazard classes, identification numbers, packing groups, and required labels for regulated materials.
Reportable Quantity (RQ)
The quantity of a hazardous substance that, if spilled, must be reported; indicated by 'RQ' on shipping papers and packages.
Marine Pollutant marking
A white triangle with a fish and an 'X' through the fish, displayed on bulk packages and vehicles transporting materials toxic to marine life.
Shipper's Certification
A signed statement on a shipping paper by the shipper, certifying that the package has been prepared according to the hazardous materials regulations.
Hazardous Waste Manifest
A Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest that must be signed and carried when transporting hazardous wastes.
Bulk Packaging
Packaging, other than a vessel or barge, including a transport vehicle, in which hazardous materials are loaded with no intermediate form of containment and with capacities exceeding specific thresholds (e.g., >119 gallons for liquid, >882 pounds/ >119 gallons for solid, >1000 pounds water capacity for gas).
Cargo Tank
A bulk packaging that is a tank primarily for liquids or gases, permanently attached to or forming part of a motor vehicle, or not permanently attached but loaded/unloaded without removal from the vehicle.
Portable Tank
Bulk packaging (except cylinders) designed primarily to be loaded onto, or temporarily attached to, a transport vehicle or ship, and handled by mechanical means.
Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC)
A rigid or flexible portable packaging, other than a cylinder or portable tank, designed for mechanical handling.
Tank Loading (Hazardous Materials)
Requires a qualified person to always be watching, alert, with a clear view of the tank, within 25 feet, knowledgeable of hazards and emergency procedures, and authorized to move the tank.
Safe Haven
An approved place for parking unattended vehicles loaded with explosives, typically designated by local authorities.
National Response Center (NRC)
Helps coordinate emergency response to chemical hazards and maintains a 24-hour toll-free line for reporting incidents.
CHEMTREC (Chemical Transportation Emergency Center)
Provides emergency personnel with technical information about the physical properties of hazardous materials via a 24-hour toll-free line.
