What is the truth table?
it shows all possible, true values for a logical statement. This information is depending on whether it's parts are true or false
what can you use truth tables for?
You can use it to check for a tautology, a contradiction or contingent
what is a tautology?
A statement that is always true
What is a contradiction?
A statement that is always false?
What is a contingent?
A statement that could be true or false, depending on the situation of circumstances
What should I know about truth tables, and each operator?
Each operator has a truth table for how they work. they are really easy to understand, but won't make sense until you use it yourself to prove that they are accurate because one's first thought is that these aren't true or valid.
What operators?
The symbols that modify the statements. You have five of them negation., conjunction, disjunction, conditional, and bi conditional
What happens to the statements when we make truth tables?
we turned the statement into variables, a.k.a. letters. like we will take a statement and just equate to a letter just to make it easier to deal with. it doesn't matter which letter you pick for each statement.
example of a statement getting turned into a letter
"I like hot dogs" = H
for your operators what's significant about the amount of variables?
you need two statements to deal with any of the other operators except negation. on default we usually use "P" and "Q"
If I was looking at this quiz, it would be the best thing to do to understand this
Google pictures of truth tables
how many vertical rows do I need for my truth tables?
The number rules equals two to the power of how many variables are there
What does the truth table look like for negation?
opposite of what the statement was
What does the true table look like for a conjunction?
It's only true if both are true. If both of them are not true then it's false.
what does the truth table look like for a disjunction?
only false when both are false. if both of them are not false, then it's true.
What's the truth table look like for a conditional
it's only false if the first is true, and the second is false. any other time it's true.
Tell the truth look like for a bi conditional
It's only true in both sides match
If two compound statements have identical true tables, then they are
Logically equivalent, and can be swapped in any argument
