Types of salivary glands
Serous: the parotid gland, von ebner glands of tongue
Mucous: glands of the root of the tongue.
Seromucous submandibular gland, sublingual gland, labial lands, buccal glands, molar glands.
According to size:
Minor salivary glands: scattered throughout oral cavity embedded within mucosa and submucosa.
NO NEED FOR NEURONAL STIMULI
Major: opens via ducts into oral cavity.
NEED FOR NEURONAL STIMULI
(Parotid, submandibular, sublingual)
Parotid gland (characteristics)
Purely serous
largest salivary gland
located in the parotid nest
enclosed in parotid fascia
what are the borders of the parotid nest.
Anteriorly: Masseter muscle, ramus of mandible, medial pterygoid.
posteriorly: mastoid process, sternocleidomastoid, posterior belly of digastric
superiorly: zygomatic arch
inferiorly: body of mandible
superficially: parotid masseteric fascia.
contents of the parotid nest
External carotid artery.
branches of facial nerve.
auricotemporal nerve.
Retromandibular vein, (a fusion of the maxillary vein and the superficial temporal vein)
Blood supply of the parotid gland
superficial temporal artery,
maxillary artery
posterior auricular artery
Venous drainage:
Parotid veins (retromandibular veins)
Submandibular Gland characteristics
-seromucous gland
-located in the submandibular triangle.
-opens in the sublingual caruncle,
blood supply of submandibular gland
facial artery and lingual artery
Venous drainage of submandibular gland:
facial vein and lingual vein
Lymphatic drainage:
submandibular lymph nodes
Sublingual gland characteristics
Mainly mucous secretion, but still seromucous
it opens in the sublingual fold also in the sublingual caruncle with the submandibular
the minor ones open on either side of he major, and open on the sublingual fold.
Blood supply of the sublingual gland (same as submandibular) also the same as the lymphatic drainage (of the submandibular gland
facial artery, lingual artery
Venous drainage:
facial vein, lingual vein.
