Matter
anything that has a mass and a volume
Mass
The amount of matter in an object. The amount of "stuff" is measured in grams. (weight)
Volume
the amount of space an object takes up. We use cm3 or mL to measure volume.
Formula to calculate volume or a rectangular prism
L x W x H = cm3
How do we measure volume for irregularly shaped objects?
A graduated cylinder and water displacement.
Density
The ratio of mass to volume. Everything has density. It is how much stuff is packed into a given volume.
What is the formula for density?
Density = Mass divided by Volume (D=M/V)
What is the unit measurement of density?
g/cm3
What is the density of water?
1.0 g/cm3
facts about water:
A cube measuring 1cm x 1 cm x 1 cm take up 1 cm3 of space, holds 1mL of water and has a mass of 1 gram.
What are the 3 states (or phases) of matter
solid, liquid and gas
Atom
The smallest unit of matter that still contains of the properties of that matter.
Element
Matter that is made up of one kind of atom.
Molecule
Atoms that are chemically bound together. The smallest particle in a compound that has the all the chemical properties of the compound is a molecule.
Periodic Table of the Elements
The list of more than 100 different elements that are found on Earth.
Heat
makes molecules move faster. In a solid, is results in melting. In a liquid, boiling gives the molecules energy to evaporate, forming a gas.
The removal of heat (cooling)
slows down molecules. In a gas, it causes gas to condense and form a liquid. In liquid, it causes it to freeze
Mixture
is matter made up of two or more materials mixed together, but not chemically joined. Mixing is a physical change.
Examples of physical change:
in a physical change, a substance keeps its chemical composition. Examples are: freezing, boiling, evaporation, tearing and crushing. It is easy to reverse.
Compound
is a result of a chemical change.
Examples of chemical change:
During a chemical change, a new chemical composition and new properties are formed. Examples of chemical changes are: burning of wood, cooking of food, rusting of iron and souring of milk. It is dificult to reverse
What is the boiling point of water?
100 degrees celcius or 212 degrees farenheit
What is the freezing point of water?
0 degrees celcius or 32 degrees farenheit
What is absolute zero?
It is the lowest temperature possible. It is -460 degrees F or -273 degrees or 0 degrees Kelvin
