describe key aspects of the theory
humans have an inborn capacity for language in the form of a language acquisition device
all human languages share a deep rooted set of grammatical rules so we must have universal grammar
even if linguistic input I spoor, children will still be able to master their native language
there is a critical period where we are especially receptive to linguistic input (5 to 10 year olds)
evidence supporting theory
âI drawed itâ, incorrect use inflectional morpheme that children will not have heard others say, therefore universal grammar
we can produce sentences that are grammatically correct, yet have no meaning and that we have never heard before
if an adult was to say a grammatically incorrect sentence, a child would be able to notice this
burko and brownâs wugs
evidence to contradict the theory
just because children do not learn solely from imitation does not mean that we have a language acquisition device
every language has a different syntax, therefore no universal grammar
who put forward the theory of nativism
Chomsky
