Routing between different organizations' networks

Distance Vector Routing

Routers share their full routing tables with neighbors periodically

Link-State Routing

Routers share only information about their directly connected links

RIP (Routing Information Protocol)

A distance-vector protocol using hop count as its metric

OSPF (Open Shortest Path First)

A link-state protocol using cost as its metric.

EIGRP (Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol)

A Cisco proprietary protocol combining distance-vector and link-state features

BGP (Border Gateway Protocol)

The protocol that routes data between autonomous systems on the internet

Hop Count

The number of devices a packet passes through to reach its destination

Cost

A metric based on speed, delay, or bandwidth used in routing decisions
