Redox Reactions
Electron transfer processes involving oxidation (loss of electrons) and reduction (gain of electrons).
Oxidation
The loss of electrons by a species in a redox reaction.
Reduction
The gain of electrons by a species in a redox reaction.
Reducing Agent
A substance that donates electrons and causes another substance to be reduced.
Oxidizing Agent
A substance that accepts electrons and causes another substance to be oxidized.
Oxidation Number
The charge an atom would have if electrons were transferred completely in a molecule or ionic compound.
Disproportionation Reaction
A reaction where the same substance is both oxidized and reduced.
Electron Transfer
Movement of electrons from one chemical species to another.
Oxidizing Agent
An agent that gains electrons and is reduced during a redox reaction.
Reducing Agent
An agent that donates electrons and is oxidized during a redox reaction.
