post-production
The part of the production where the filming has completed, and now the editing process begins.
NLE
meaning a kind of editing style where the editor can make changes to video or audio in any order. You don't need to follow a pre-determined plan or chronological order.
Frame Rate
the amount of frames/pictures captured per second (the more frames the better usually)
Resolution
The number of distinct pixels that are captured which contributes to the quality and detail of images.
Video Compression
A process that reduces the size of video files by reducing the amount of data it needs.
Codec
A device or software that can compress and decompress digital media.
Continuity Editing
This is where one combines multiple, but related camera shots into one in order to smoothly convey consistency in time, space, and scene.
Montage
A series of multiple images and short shots into a sequence to condense time, space, and information.
Transition
The process of moving from one scene to the next.
Picture Lock
The point in post-production where the video editing is finalized and approved, and no further changes or edits will be made.
Clip
A short segment of your media: a video file, audio file, that you add to your timeline
Bin
It acts as a folder within the project panel to help keep your content organized and tidy. You can have many bins for different media files.
Project panel
It is the area where all your imported media is stored (video files, audio, sequences, etc.). You can preview the media and organize here too.
Timeline
the space where you put your video together by arranging your media files in order.
sequence
can form your individual parts of media together into bigger, more manageable chunks. You can make as many sequences as you want within the timeline.
Playhead
It is the vertical blue line on your timeline that indicates exactly what frame you are viewing and can be moved back and forth throughout the project.
Source monitor
A panel where you can preview and select video or audio clips before you add it to your main timeline. You can mark the specific section you want to add.
Program Monitor
This is the panel that displays your active sequence and will play back the clips you are editing.
Track
It is each of the individual rows within your timeline where you can video files and audio files. They are separated within visuals above and audio on the bottom.
In point / out point
You can set these points to mark the beginning and end of a specific segment in your video to use, edit or export.
Sequence settings
These settings allow you to modify a variety of properties or factors (frame size, audio, color, etc.) within a specific sequence.
Razor Blade Tool
A tool (looks like a small razor blade) where you click anywhere on a video or audio file to split them into two individual parts.
Snapping function
A tool (looks like a small magnet) that makes separate clips “snap” together, meaning it automatically aligns the clips together to prevent any unwanted gaps between clips.
De-Link Tool
This tool helps you separate the audio and video tracks of a clip, making it easier to edit one without affecting the other.
Ripple Delete Function
This function allows you to select a clip to delete from your timeline, and then it will shift the remaining clips to close the gap.
Rolling Edit tool
This tool allows you to adjust the cut between two clips without affecting the duration of the overall timeline
Insert edit
This is the process where you can insert a clip and it will move the others to make room for it in the timeline.
Overwrite edit
This allows you to replace any existing footage on your timeline with a new clip with the same duration as the original clip.
Marker function
This is a tool that helps you identify important points within your video timeline and can help organize your editing process.
speed/duration window
This window allows you to adjust the speed of your video/audio clip which then affects the duration of the clip as well. Same thing goes for adjusting the duration of the clip, the speed will be adjusted accordingly.
Cropping
This is adjusting the video to or around the edges of the frame, meaning making the video fit to the frame, extending it to make it bigger, or shrinking it if needed.
Keyframing
this allows you to bring objects to life over a period of time, which is important for creating animations and motion graphics.
Pen tool
a tool used to draw shapes, marks and details for precise graphics and visual effects.
Rubberbanding audio
this is the process of changing the audio levels by adjusting the line in the middle of the audio waveform in the timeline.
J cut
will play the audio of the next scene before the image changes, creating anticipation.
L cut
where the audio from the scene before continues to play over the imaging of the next scene.
Nesting
a tool that bundles together segments by inserting a sequence into another sequence, allowing you to edit and add effects as if it were one clip rather than multiple clips.
Adjustment layer
This ia a transparent layer that allows you to add effects or color adjustments to your clips without affecting the original video file.
Re-link offline media
This is how you can reconnect and restore your clips (any imported media that was moved, renamed, or deleted outside of Premiere Pro).
Render
This is creating temporary preview files, so your project with heavy effects or complex layers can play back at full speed and good quality.
Export
This is the process of creating the final video files that can be saved to a computer or hard drive.
