What is the Veterinary Technician Practice Model?

The Nursing Process — ensures excellent care and communicates changes in patient status to the veterinary team and client; assesses individual patient needs

Step 1: Assessment — what does it include?

Collective subjective and objective data, establish a patient database (medical history, records, P/E, lab results, procedures), consult with veterinarian, conduct rounds

Step 2: Planning — what is done?

Identify physiological and psychological needs, perform technician evaluation, use critical thinking to identify current and potential problems

Step 3: Implementation — what is done?

Carry out nursing plan based on technician evaluation, prioritize actions, work toward desired patient outcomes

Step 4: Evaluation — what is done?

Evaluate patient’s response to therapy, revise plan as a team if needed
