What is the function of the sensory register?

Stores stimuli from the environment

The sensory register has a Different store for each of the senses which are all coded differently.

2
New cards

What is duration of the sensory register?

The duration of the sensory register is only half a second

3
New cards

What is the capacity of the sensory register

The sensory register has a very high capacity

4
New cards

How does information pass from the sensory register into the short term memory?

You pay attention to it

5
New cards

How is information in the short term memory coded?

Information in the short term memory is coded acoustically

6
New cards

What is the duration of the short term memory?

The duration of the short term memory is 18-30 seconds

7
New cards

What is the capacity of the short term memory?

Limited 7+-2

8
New cards

What is maintenance rehearsal?

When we repeat (rehearse) material to our selves repeatedly.

Ut allows thibgs to be kept in our shortterm memory longer and if done long enough information can pass to your ltm

9
New cards

What is the capacity of the long term memory?

Potentially unlimited

10
New cards

How is long term memory coded?

Semantically

11
New cards

What did Bahrick et al discover about long term memory?

Participants were able to recognise threir names and faces of class mates up to 50 years later

12
New cards

What did Alan baddeley find out to support the multistore memory mode?

We tend to mix up words that sound similar in out STM. But we mix up words that have similar meanings in out LTM

13
New cards

Whata a counterpoint to the pervious card?

We also form memories based on faces, names, facts and places. The multi store memory model doesn’t support this as it only shows evidence kf supporting digital, letters and words (consonant sylables)

What’s a limitation of the multistore memory model involving subject KF?

JF's STM when recalling digits when they were read aloud ti him was very poor but his recall was much better when he read the digits himself.

This shows that the MSM store is wrongin assuming that there is just one store thaf processes all information

15
New cards

What is a limitation of the Multi store memory model involving prolonged rehearsal?

MSM suggests that the amount of time you spend rehearsing something can help transfer it to long term memory but it wad acctually found that the type of rehearsal that is important-elaborat rehearsal is needed for longterm memory transference
