The map above is called the Carolingian Empire but it is also the first Holy Roman Empire.  This is basically what Charlemagne conquered in light blue.  When he died the Holy Roman Empire lost the Frankish territories (France) and came to look like the Holy Roman Empire pictured below in purple.

It starts with the Roman Empire and then splits into the Eastern Empire.  You need to know that the Byzantine Empire lasts for at least 1000 years and that it starts strong and gradually deteriorates.

The only group on this map that isn't Germanic is the Huns.  Essentially you need to know that the Western Roman Empire becomes a target for migrating/invading peoples.

This is when a government forms in what becomes Constantinople.  Some historians mark this as the beginning of the Byzantine Empire in the East.  You need to know that the Western side of this map falls in 476 to invading/migrating Germans and the Eastern side of this map continues to be strong (Byzantine Empire).
