Matter
any material that has mass and takes up space
2 types of matter
Pure substances and Mixtures
Pure substance
Matter with a fixed or definite composition
Element
A substance that contains only one type of matter, Cannot be broken down without changing properties, All atoms are the same
Compound
Two or more different elements bonded together in a set ratio, Can be broken down into simpler substances
Molecule
Atoms bonded together within an element
Are mixtures pure substances, why?
No, because they are not chemically combined
Mixture
Two or more substances that are physically mixed together, Can separate with physical processes
Homogenous
And make sure that stays the same throughout i.e. solutions
Heterogeneous
A mixture you can see the different parts of I.e. chocolate chip cookie
Atom
The smallest particle of an element that retains the characteristics
Physical property
Something that can be observed without changing the identity of a substance, Use five senses
Intrinsive property
Independent of the amount of substance present I.e. scent
Extensive property
Depends on the amount of substance present i.e. mass
Physical change
A change in a physical property ( appearance or state), Identity of the substance is not changed
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, liquid and gas(+ vapor)
Chemical property
The ability or inability of a substance to react with another substance I.e. ability to rust
Chemical change
When a new substance is made( Chemical reaction) I.e. bubbles
Masses neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction (Mass of reactants = mass of products)
Law of conservation of mass
Signs of chemical change
Color change, Production of gas, Light emitted, switch forms, Absorb or release heat
