What are redox reactions
Reactions in which oxidation and reduction both take place at the same time
What is oxidation
-oxidation - The loss of electrons
-reduction- the gain of electrons
What is a half equations and give example of symbol equation using hydrogen
A half equation is an equation that shows the gain or loss of electronsof a single element in a reaction.
Hydrogen ions gain electrons so are reduced
2H+. +. 2e- —> H
What is the half equation for the oxidation of magnesium?
Mg ➔ Mg2+ + 2e-
What type of reaction is a displacement reaction
Displacement reactions are a type of redox reaction. In displacement reactions. It’s always the metal ion that gain electrons and is reduced, the metal atom always loses electrons and is oxidised.
Extra note
Redox reactions don’t happen by themselves both take place at the same time.
If one substance loses electrons, another substance has to gain electrons and bc they happen together we call them redox reactions
What do we call ions that aren't involved in a chemical reaction?
Spectator ions
Turn displacement reaction of calcium and iron sulphate into ionic equation and half equations
Ca + FeSO4 —> CaSO4 + Fe ==displacement reaction
Ca + Fe2+SO42- —> Ca2+SO42- + Fe
Can get rid of sulphate as it’s a spectator ion
Ca + Fe2+ —> Ca2+ + Fe
Ca —> Ca2+ + 2e-
Fe2+ + 2e- —> Fe
What do ionic reactions only show
Only show the particles that react and the products they form
Ionic equations for redox reactions only concentrate on the substances which are oxidised or reduced
