Single Repeat Sign
A double bar with two dots placed at the end of a Phrase or sections means “repeat from the sign back to the beginning.”
Double Repeat Signs
Two repeat signs facing each other mean “Repeat the music between the two signs.”
First and Second Signs
Two repeat signs facing each other mean “Repeat the music between the two signs.”
First and Second Endings
A repeat sign is sometimes combined with the first ending, which means “Repeat from the beginning, skip the first ending on the repetition, and proceed to the second ending.”
Da capo al fine
A repeat sign can be replaced by the Italian term Da Capo (appreciated D.C.), which means “Repeat from the head” (beginning). If only a portion of the music is to be repeated, the term fine (“end”) is inserted at the point where the music is to end.
Dal segno al fine
A repeat sign can be replaced by the Italian term Dal segno, which means “Repeat from the sign” (not from the beginning). If only a portion of the music is to be repeated, the term fine is inserted at the point where the music is to end.
