UW Whitewater's SOC 355 Social Psychology The Psychology of Narcissism Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arJLy3hX1E8
Where did the term of narcissism come from?
A Greek myth about a handsome man named Narcissus who gazed at his own reflection in water for so long that he died. A flower bloomed in that spot, and it too was named Narcissus (also known as the Daffodil). The myth captures the idea of narcissism, or elevated and often detrimental self-involvement.
The video says narcissism includes particular traits identified by psychologists. What are they?
Inflated, grandiose self-image, so much so that narcissistic people think they are better than others and deserve special treatment.
What are the two forms?
Grandiose and vulnerable
Grandiose narcissism
Most familiar kind: extroversion, dominance, and attention-seeking. Pursue attention and power for status. Also:
Tend to ask selfishly which has consequences on others.
When rosy view of self is challenged, they may become resentful and aggressive.
Vulnerable
Quiet and reserved. They have a strong sense of entitlement, but are easily threatened or slighted. Also:
Tend to act selfishly which has consequences on others.
When rosy view of self is challenged, they may become resentful and aggressive.
Narcissistic personality disorder
A more extreme form, making up about 1-2% of the population. It more often occurs in men, and in adults.
What are the traits of the narcissistic personality disorder?
Grandiose view of oneself
Problems with empathy
A sense of entitlement
A need for admiration or attention These traits take over people's lives and cause significant problems, making it fit the "personality disorder" definition.
What contributes to narcissism
BIOLOGY: A genetic component, though genes are not identified.
ENVIRONMENT: Parents who put their kids on a high pedestal contributes to grandiose narcissism, and cold controlling parents may increase vulnerable narcissism.
CULTURE: Individualistic cultures have higher rates than collectivism cultures.
Does social media contribute to increasing narcissism?
No evidence at this time (2022) that it does. Rather, it is seen as a platform that narcissists used to seek social status and attention.
Can narcissists improve?
Yes, if they engage in honest reflection of their behavior and caring for others helps. It is challenging however for them to work at self-betterment when one thinks they are already better.
