Types of Groups

Social Identity Theory
The theory that a person's self-esteem is linked to their identification with groups.
Ingroup Favoritism
The tendency to favor members of one's own group over those in outgroups.
Role Conflict
A situation in which compliance with one role requirement makes it difficult to comply with another.
Groupthink
A phenomenon where pressures for conformity deter a group from critically appraising unusual or unpopular views.
Social Loafing
The tendency for individuals to exert less effort when working collectively than when alone.
Diversity in Groups
The presence of differences among group members that can impact group dynamics and performance.
Faultlines
Perceived divisions within a group that can split members into subgroups based on individual differences.
Group Decision Making
A process where decisions are made collaboratively by a group rather than by an individual.

The tendency for group members to adopt more extreme positions after group discussion.
