Exercise Science
Umbrella term for the study of physical activity, exercise, sport, and athletic performance and the movement and adaptations that result from regular activity.
ACSM
American College of Sports Medicine; founded in 1954 as a professional organization focused on advancing sports medicine and exercise science.
SHAPE
Society for Health and Physical Education; first meeting in 1885; promotes health and physical education in schools.
Dudley Allen Sargent
MD who pioneered individualized physical education and is considered an early personal trainer.
Harvard Fatigue Laboratory
Influential early exercise physiology lab at Harvard that studied fatigue, metabolism, and performance.
Kraus-Weber fitness tests
Tests used to assess basic fitness; results showed US children were less fit than European peers.
NATA
National Athletic Trainers' Association; founded in 1950; professional body for athletic trainers.
NSCA
National Strength and Conditioning Association; founded in 1978; promotes strength, conditioning, and performance guidelines.
Cooper Clinic
Fitness and preventive medicine clinic founded by Dr. Kenneth Cooper, known for fitness testing and preventive programs.
William Harvey
English physician who described the systemic circulation of blood.
Hippocrates
Ancient Greek physician who advocated exercise as essential to health.
Galen
Ancient physician associated with early anatomy/physiology; linked to gladiators in exercise history.
Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier
French chemist who established the role of oxygen in metabolism and contributed to respiration studies.
Pierre-Simon Laplace
French mathematician who collaborated on respiration experiments with Lavoisier and contributed to energy studies.
Kinesiology
Study of movement; umbrella field that includes exercise science, physical education, sport history, and sport sociology.
Athletic Training
Field focused on prevention, assessment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries; part of the exercise science umbrella.
Exercise Physiology
Study of how the body's systems respond and adapt to physical activity.
Biomechanics
Application of mechanical principles to understand human movement and performance.
Nutrition
Science of nutrients and energy balance and their impact on health and performance.
Psychology
Study of mental factors affecting sport and exercise performance, motivation, and behavior.
Motor Behavior
Study of how people learn and control movement across development and aging.
Physical Activity
Any movement produced by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure; includes daily activities.

Structured, planned, repetitive movement aimed at improving fitness or health.
