It is set in a big city. I know this because of how the book describes it. I also know it is in Chicago because it mentions it later in the book.

The aptitude test helps determine which Faction you most belong in. You take the test at the age of 16 years old.
Describe the aptitude test.
The aptitude test is a simulation which gives you a series of situations and categorizes you into certain Factions based on how you respond to the situation.

They are inconclusive because she tested into three different Factions. These Factions were Dauntless, Erudite, and Abnegation.
What secret is Beatrice told to keep about herself and the results of the aptitude test?
She is told to keep the secret that she is Divergent.
Who are the factionless?
The factionless are people who failed to complete the initiation of the Faction they chose.
Why are the Abnegation chosen as political leaders?
They are chosen as political leaders because they are supposedly incorruptible due to their selflessness.
Why do the Abnegation politicians feud with the Erudite representatives?
They feud because the Erudite believe that they should have more political power than the Abnegation.
How do initiates make their selection at the choosing ceremony?
The initiates must cut themselves with a knife and then spill their blood into the bowl of the Faction they choose.
Why were factions formed?
They were divided into factions that sought to eradicate those qualities they believed responsible for the world's disarray.
What positions in society does each faction fill?
Abnegation fill political leaders. Erudite fill teachers and researchers. Candor fill leaders in law. Amity fill farmers and counselors and caretakers. Dauntless provide us protection.
What evidence is there that the faction system in not working as it was intended?
Not all of the factions get along with each other.

First stage is physical, second stage is emotional, and third stage is mental.

Cowardice is defined as the failure to act in the midst of fear.
Why does Al want a tattoo?
Al wants a tattoo to make him feel like he actually left his old faction.
What will Tris' tattoo represent?
Tris' tattoo represents three birds, for each member of the family she left behind, flying toward her heart.
What differences does Tris see between Eric and Four?
Eric is the ruthless kind of Dauntless whereas Four is the honorable kind.

How is Tris bullied?

How does Tris demonstrate her talents during "capture the flag"?
She demonstrates the ability to be a leader and strategize. She does this by coming up with a plan on how to find the flag by climbing the Ferris wheel and commanding people where to go in order to capture the flag.
At the end of chapter 12, does Tris seem pleased or worried about her choice of Dauntless? Why?
She seems pleased with her choice because of the laughter and bold actions she gets to take.
Why does Tris take Al's place when he's about to get knives thrown at him?
Tris wants to prove to Eric that he is a coward for bullying them while she is not, instead she is brave.
How had Tris changed since she joined the Dauntless? Consider physical parts of her as well as emotional.
Physically, she has gained muscle. Emotionally, she has become more confident and brave.
Why does Eric cause Tris to have second thoughts about beating Molly?
Because he congratulated her and said he underestimated her which she immediately thinks it means she did something wrong.
Why can't Tris' mom visit Caleb?
Because the Erudite won't allow the Abnegation visitors in their compound.

Tris' mom advises Tris to stay in the middle of the rankings and not draw attention to herself.

She realizes her mother was born a Dauntless. She knows this because her mom knows so much about initiation and she can navigate through the Dauntless halls easily.

Edward gets stabbed in the eye with a butter knife. This is because people were trying to eliminate the competition since he was ranked first.
What shows that Tris is becoming accepted by the Dauntless?
The Dauntless-born initiates invite her to come and do something dangerous with them.
