Communication Networking
The exchange of information and ideas among people with a common profession or special interest.
Internet
A global network providing communication facilities.
Network
When two or more systems are connected through wire or wireless.
Client-Server Model
At least one computer provides services to other computers known as clients.
Client
A computer that requests services or resources from a server.
Server
A computer that provides resources, data, or services to client computers.
Peer-to-Peer Network
A type of network where each computer has equal status and can access resources and data.
LAN
Local Area Network; a network connecting computers in a single room or building.
WAN
Wide Area Network; a network connecting computers over large geographical distances.
Subnetwork
A segmented portion of a larger network to improve efficiency and security.
Thin Client
A device that relies heavily on a server for processing and functionality.
Thick Client
A device that can perform processing independently, even if disconnected from the server.
Bus Topology
A network topology that uses a single central cable to which all computers are connected.
Star Topology
A network topology where each computer is linked to a central device.
Mesh Topology
A network topology where all devices are interconnected to each other.
Hybrid Topology
A combination of two or more different network topologies.
Cloud Computing
Storing and accessing data and applications over the internet instead of local devices.
Public Cloud
Cloud computing services offered to the general public over the internet.
Private Cloud
Cloud services dedicated to a single organization or user group.
IP Addressing
A numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication.
Static IP Address
An IP address that does not change and is permanently assigned to a device.
Dynamic IP Address
An IP address that changes each time a device joins the network.
Subnetting
Dividing an IP network into smaller, manageable sub-networks to improve performance.
Ethernet
A networking protocol for data transmission over cabled networks.
DNS
Domain Name Service; resolves domain names to IP addresses.
URL
Uniform Resource Locator; the web address used to access a specific resource on the internet.
CSMA/CD
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection; a network protocol for managing data transmission.
Modem
A device that connects a computer to the internet over a telephone line.
