What is the difference between collapse and weakness
collapse is a sudden loss of postural tone (not necessarily consciousness), weakness is a state of lacking strength
define presyncope
partial to near loss of consciousness often associated with mental dullness, transient wobbliness or weakness
define syncope
TLOC: subset of collapse involving loss of consciousness and collapse
General cause of syncope
transient local, global cerebral hypoxia and hypertension
define cardiogenic syncope
intermittent, profound, abrupt hypotension
causes of cardiogenic synchope
marked reduction of cerebral blood flow, decreased O2 to RAS, excitement/exertion (increased O2 demand), arrythmias
how does structural cardiac disease cause syncope
obstruction of outflow leading to low cardiac output
define neurocardiogenic syncope
sudden autonomic nerve system fail
triggers of neurocardiogenic syncope
exited, cough, GI illness, vasodilation, bradycardia
causes of non syncopal collapse
neurogenic (seizure), respiratory (URO, pulm hypertense), narcolepsy, exercise-induced, neuromuscular disease, metabolic disease, OD of cardiovascularly active drugs.
what is tussive syncope
coughing increases intrathoracic pressure and decreases venous return triggering reflex bradycardia and vasodilation
Define syncope
breif, low blood flow to the brain, rapid recovery
define seizure
longer, abnormal electrical activity, convulsion, post-ictal stage
what step of diagnostics is essential for differentiating syncope from seizure
history
diagnostic plan for evaluating syncope
hx, phys exam, electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, cbc/chem/ua, thoracic radiographs, maybe holter monitoring
most common progression of sudden cardiac death in dogs
v tac to v fib
differentials for sudden cardiac death in dogs
DCM, arythmogenic RV cardiomyopathy, subaortic stenosis, pulmonic stenosis, chronic degenerative valve disease
Differentials for sudden cardiac death in cats
HCM, restrictive cardiomyopathy, unclassified cardiomyopathy
