What was Japan’s role in WW1
Alliance - fought for the allies
Colonies - Seized German-Controlled Pacific islands.
Post WW1 Negotiations:
Japan wanted more islands and Shandong for their contributions
→ at the beginning of the war they stated they did not want any territory.

Objective:
End discrimination based on race, colour and nationality
promote equal rights for all people, regardless of their background.

Racial equality clause: Rejection caused Japan’s alimentation from other powers,
economic crisis in Japan (overpopulation)
Raised tariffs in US, Cut off immigration to US.
All of these lead to rationalised and increase nationalism which would lead to WW2

recognition on the world stage as a major power, Gains a seat at the League of nations
Cons:
rejection of the Racial equality clause: fuelled resentment in Japan and made them lead towards militarism
