Duke Orsino
In love with Countess Olivia, but she does not return his love. He is passionate, sensitive, and persistent and believes love is necessary and must be reciprocated.
Countess Olivia
She is mourning her brother's death and has sworn to avoid the company of men for seven years. She is introverted and keeps to herself and believes love is unnecessary.
Viola (Cesario)
Claims she can sing and speak well to get a job working for Duke Orsino. She is brave, appreciative, charming, intelligent, and eager and believes in genuine and authentic love.
Sir Toby Belch
Olivia’s uncle who is rowdy, fun-loving, and irresponsible, often drinking and partying and encourages foolish behavior.
Sir Andrew Aguecheek
A foolish nobleman who wants to woo Olivia and is staying with Sir Toby. He is dull and foolish.
Cesario
Viola in disguise as a young man who serves Duke Orsino. Orsino sends him to woo Lady Olivia, and she falls in love with him.
Feste (the Clown)
He cleverly flatters Olivia and uses witty wordplay to entertain her and prove his cleverness; also disguises himself as Sir Topas.
Malvolio
Critical of Feste and is tricked into thinking Olivia loves him by a fake letter written by Maria. He is pompous and full of self-love.
Antonio
A sea captain who saved Sebastian and is in love with him - later accuses Cesario of being ungrateful.
Sebastian
Viola’s twin brother, believed to have drowned in the shipwreck; mistaken for Cesario, marries Olivia.
Maria
She tricks Malvolio by writing a fake love letter from Olivia, and also marries Sir Toby as a reward for her clever trick.
Sir Topas
Feste, the fool, in disguise as a priest who visits Malvolio, who has been locked up as a lunatic, as part of the prank.
