The word Otolaryngology comes from Greek roots that mean The study of the ears nose, and throat. We have how to pronounce it written on our board (point at it) because we know it is a confusing and long word. We struggled for months trying to figure out how to pronounce it.

We chose this career because initially, I wanted to do a display on Dermatology or a career that has more of a cosmetic surgery aspect, and she wanted to do a display on something that is focused more internally in the human body. Like a neurologist. So, we compromised on an Otolaryngologist, because It combines our interests. As an Otolaryngoligist is one of the only medical professions that is both a medical doctor and surgeon.

An Otolaryngologist is the same thing as an ENT. But an Otolaryngologist is the formal term. Most people just say ENT because It is easier to remember and pronounce. Additionally, Otolaryngology is the oldest medical specialty in the United States.

As we said, the main focus of an otolaryngologist is to diagnose and treat issues located in the ears, nose, and throat. Otherwise known as the ENT region. They deal with things that can range from treating something simple like an earache, all the way to performing rigrous surgeries such as blood vessel reconstructions. They also work with other specialists like physicians and allergists to be more accurate with their diagnoses.

The ENT region is full of tiny intercalate parts that an Otolarngoloist must be familiar with. On our board, we tried our best to show a simplified version of the main areas an ENT works with. On your right side, you will see some of the main parts of the nose and throat. For example they would have to know where the Nasal cavity is and they would have to know that it warms and humidifiys the air you breathe as well as provide you your sense of smell. On your left side, you will see the main parts of the ear and another example would be that an otolarngoligist would have to know where your auditory neve is, and that it carries signals to the brain as audible sounds.

To become an Otolaryngologist, you will have to complete 13-15 years of additional schooling beyond high school. It is broken down into 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of med school, 5 years of specialty training, and an optional 2 year fellowship. Although, It is highly recommended. The top school for undergrad and med school is Harvard Medical University which costs around 69,300 dollars a year if you plan on going out of state. The top specialty training program is at NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine. And tuition for it is free because of It’s scholarship program. The top fellowship program is at Mass General Brigham’s and It will cost you around 84,263 dollars.

The good news is that after you complete all that school and get a job, you should be set for life as Otolaryngologists make between 392k to 420k as the global average. The United State's average is a little lower at around 197,041 dollars yearly. And here in Fort Myers, the average is around 202,401 dollars yearly.

Overall this job really only has 2 cons, increased health risks especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rigorous schooling. But the school is worth it because there are so many pros to this job. It has a good stable income, new innovations in robotics have made competing surgery easier, you get the rewarding feeling of helping others in your community, and so much more.

We had so much fun working on this project. And we learned so much. Before this, I’ve never heard the word otolaryngologist, and now after researching it for months straight, I’m considering it as a potential career path.
