The Darkroom
A scientific laboratory designed for the controlled handling and storage of x-ray film to prevent exposure to white light and ionizing radiation.
Dry Section
An area in the darkroom that should be kept 3 to 4 feet away from the wet section to prevent contamination by processing chemicals.
Barium Plaster Shielding
A darkroom construction material that must be 25mm thick to provide adequate protection against radiation.
Darkroom Air Changes
The required ventilation rate of 8−10 room changes per hour to remove stale humid air and build-up of fumes.
Darkroom Storage Temperature
The specific temperature range for film storage, maintained at 10−21∘C (50−70∘F).
Labyrinth (Maze) Entrance
A darkroom entrance designed without a door where light is reflected at least 3 times to reduce intensity to a harmless level.
Wratten 6B Filter
An amber or orange-brown filter used for monochromatic (blue-sensitive) film that filters wavelengths greater than 550nm.
GBX2 Filter
A multi-purpose red filter safe for orthochromatic (blue/green sensitive) and monochromatic films, filtering wavelengths greater than 600nm to 620nm.
Direct Exposure Film
A type of radiographic film with a thicker emulsion used primarily for intraoral dental radiography; it requires increased patient dose but decreases quantum mottle.
Emulsion
The radiation and light-sensitive 'heart' of the radiographic film, composed of silver halide crystals and gelatin.
Silver Halide Crystal
The active recording medium in film emulsion, typically composed of 98% silver bromide and 2% silver iodide.
Film Base
The foundation of x-ray film, usually made of polyester (150−300μm thick), which provides a rigid structure for the emulsion.
Sensitometric Curve (H & D Curve)
A graph showing the relationship between exposure and optical density; includes the toe, shoulder, and straight-line portion.
Base Plus Fog
The inherent density of the film base and processing conditions, with an acceptable level around 0.18OD.
FIFO (First In First Out)
A storage management method used for x-ray film to ensure older stock is used before the expiration date.
Intensifying Screen
An imaging accessory that converts x-ray energy into light to expose radiographic film and decrease patient dose.
DQE (Detective Quantum Efficiency)
The ability of an intensifying screen's phosphor to interact effectively with x-rays.
Calcium Tungstate (CaWO4)
A phosphor material introduced by Thomas Edison used in intensifying screens.
Cassette Front
The part of the film holder made of low atomic number materials like Bakelite or Carbon fiber to be radiolucent.
Sensitivity Center
A physical imperfection or 'latent image center' in the emulsion lattice, often caused by silver sulfide contaminant, where the latent image forms.
Gurney-Mott Theory
The accepted theory of latent image formation stating that x-rays and light cause ionization of atoms in the silver halide crystal.
REDOX
The chemical process in development where Electrons are Used in Reduction (EUR) and Oxidation Produces Electrons (OPE).
Phenidone
A fast-reducing developing agent responsible for building up detail and gray shades in the lower scale density (Dmin) of the H&D curve.
Hydroquinone
A slow-reducing agent that builds contrast and produces the upper scale densities (Dmax) on the sensitometric curve.
Activator (Alkalinizer)
A developer component (e.g., Sodium hydroxide) that maintains alkalinity (pH9.6−10.6) and swells the emulsion gelatin.
Restrainer (Starter)
Chemicals like Potassium bromide that control the activity of reducing agents and protect unexposed silver halide crystals from development fog.
Glutaraldehyde
A hardening agent used in automatic processing developer to prevent excessive emulsion swelling and film jamming.
Stop Bath
An 'Acid Rinse Bath' typically containing 1% acetic acid that neutralizes the alkaline developer and stops the development process.
Clearing Agent (Fixing Agent)
Ammonium thiosulfate or 'hypo' which dissolves unexposed silver halide crystals from the film.
Hyporetention
A brown or pale yellow stain on a radiograph (thiosulfate retention) caused by inadequate washing.
Spatial Resolution
The ability to image small objects that have high subject contrast.
Quantum Mottle
A component of radiographic noise appearing as a speckled background, caused when an image is produced with too few x-ray photons.
Pi Lines
Artifacts appearing as fine lines at right angles to the direction of film travel, often caused by dirty rollers or a raised nick in a roller.
Crescent Marks
Positive density artifacts resembling a half-moon caused by the bending or kinking of the x-ray film.
