What is temperature?
measures the average kinetic energy of the particle of an object or substance
What is kinetic energy?
the energy of an object because of motion
What is heat?
the flow of energy from warmer places to cooler places due to the difference in temperature.
When does thermal equilibrium happen?
heat flows from a higher temperature object to a lower temperature object until the two objects have an equal temperature.
Conduction
the transfer of heat through a solid material by direct contact of particles. When particles are heated, they move faster and bump into each other which creates more heat.
Convection
the transfer of heat in a fluid (gas/liquid) caused when hotter, less dense fluids rise and cooler, more dense fluids sink.
Convection Current
When moving fluids result in a transfer of heat in a cycle.
Radiation
a way that heat can move without needing anything to physically touch or transfer it. It happens when energy travels through the air or even empty space.
Molecule
a group of atoms joined together in a particular way
Thermal Energy
Total kinetic energy of all molecules that make up the sample.
When a thing gets hotter…
it’s molecules are moving fast and have more kinetic energy
When a thing gets colder…
It’s molecules are moving fast and have more kinetic energy
Heat energy
the measurement of energy in transit between a system or area with higher kinetic energy and one of lower kinetic energy.
