what is Epiglottitis?

• caused by bacterium

  • haemophilus influenzae type b (HiB)

what are clinical manifestations of Epiglottitis?

• sudden onset of fever

• sore throat

• toxic appearance

  • agitated

  • restless

  • anxious

• tripod position

• drooling

• dysphonia (muffled voice)

• dysphagia

• respiratory distress

  • retractions, stridor, tachypnea

what are nursing interventions for Epiglottitis?

• maintain airway

  • prepare for intubation and possible trach

• initiate cardiac monitoring and pulse oximetry

• avoid placing supine - allow tripod position

• IV antibiotics and fluids

• NPO

• admin oxygen via mask, blow by blow to avoid agitation

• avoid placing objects in mouth during assessment

IGNORE
