Mission of the Academy

The mission of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy is to provide a quality education for graduates serving in the merchant marine, the military services, and those who serve the interests of the Commonwealth, Nation and global market place. The Academy does so by combining a rigorous academic program with a regimented lifestyle that instills honor, responsibility, discipline, and leadership.

Fire Triangle Elements

Heat, Fuel, Oxygen.

Class A Fire

Ordinary combustibles (wood, paper, wool); extinguished primarily with water.

Class B Fire

Flammable liquids and gases; best extinguished by shutting off source, CO₂, foam, dry chemical.

Class C Fire

Energized electrical equipment; extinguished with Dry Chemical or CO₂.

Class D Fire

Combustible metals (usually ending in -IUM); jettisoning overboard is often best option.

Class K Fire

Commercial kitchen cooking oils/fats; extinguished via wet chemical agents through saponification.
