The Person's Unit
The personal space, furniture, and equipment provided for the person by the agency.
Standard Temperature Range
The range of 68∘ to 74∘F at which most healthy people are comfortable.
Draft Prevention
Protective measures for infants and older or ill persons, including proper clothing, lap robes, blankets, and moving them from drafty areas.
CMS Comfortable Sound Level
A level that does not interfere with hearing, promotes privacy, and allows the person to take part in social activities.
Noise Reduction Strategies
Procedures such as controlling your voice, handling equipment carefully, and answering call lights promptly.
CMS Comfortable Lighting
Lighting that lessens glares and lets the person control the intensity, location, and direction of light.
Hospital Bed Controls
Electrical or manual mechanisms used to raise the bed horizontally for care or lower it for ease of getting out.
The Six Basic Bed Positions
Flat, Fowler’s position, High-Fowler’s position, Semi-Fowler’s position, Trendelenburg’s position, and Reverse Trendelenburg’s position.
Hospital Bed System
The FDA-defined system consisting of the bed frame and its parts, including the mattress, bed rails, head- and foot-boards, and bed attachments.
Bed Entrapment
The risk of a person getting caught, trapped, or entangled in spaces created by bed rails, the mattress, the bed frame, or the head- and foot-boards.
Persons at Greatest Risk for Entrapment
Individuals who are older, frail, confused, restless, small, restrained, or have poor muscle control.
Entrapment Zone 1
The space within the bed rail.
Entrapment Zone 2
The space between the top of the compressed mattress and the bottom of the bed rail and between the rail supports.
Entrapment Zone 3
The space between the bed rail and the mattress.
Entrapment Zone 4
The space between the top of the compressed mattress and the bottom of the bed rail and at the end of the bed rail.
Entrapment Zone 5
The space between the split bed rails.
Entrapment Zone 6
The space between the end of the bed rail and the side edge of the head-board or foot-board.
Entrapment Zone 7
The space between the head-board or foot-board and the end of the mattress.
Over-bed Table
A table with a base that slides under the bed, used for meals, reading, or as a work area for the nursing team.
Bedside Stand
A storage unit next to the bed used for personal items and personal care equipment.
Privacy Curtain
A curtain extending around the bed used to protect the resident's right to privacy, though it does not block sound.
Call System
A signaling device that lets the person request help; it must be kept within reach on the person’s strong side.
Bathroom Safety Equipment
Standard features including a toilet, sink, mirror, and grab bars located by the toilet.
OBRA/CMS Closet Requirements
The requirement that nursing centers provide closet space with shelves and a clothes rack, to which the person has free access.
