Motivation
A psychological state that is characterized by being guided, energized, and persistent in achieving a goal.
Instinct Theory
The theory that behavior is driven by inborn patterns of behavior essential for survival.
Drive Reduction Theory
A theory which posits that drives, such as hunger and thirst, create a state of tension that we seek to reduce.
Homeostasis
The body's ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite external changes.
Arousal Theory
The theory that people are motivated to reach an optimal level of physiological arousal.
Incentive Approach
The theory that motivation is driven by the desire to obtain rewards or incentives.
Intrinsic Motivation
Motivation driven by internal rewards, such as personal satisfaction or enjoyment.
Extrinsic Motivation
Motivation driven by external rewards, such as money or grades.
Self-Efficacy
The belief in one's ability to succeed in specific situations or accomplish a task.
Expectancy
The belief that one’s efforts will lead to a desired outcome.
Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow's theory that human motivation is based on a series of hierarchical needs, starting from basic physiological needs to self-actualization.
