Synthesis
A reaction in which two or more reactants form a single new product.
A + B → AB.
Decomposition
A reaction in which a single reactant breaks down into two or more simpler products.
AB → A + B.
Single Replacement
AB + C → AC + B or AB + C → CB +A .
If C is an anion it will replace the anion (nonmetal replaces nonmetal)
If C is an cation it will replace the cation (metal replaces metal)
Double Replacent
AB + CD → AD + CB
A and C are cations and must always come first
Neutralization
HA + BOH → BA + H2O
Also Double Replacement
acid + base → water and salt
Combustion (Organic)
Organic + O2 → CO2 + H2O
Products must always be CO2 and H2O
O2 always a reactant
Combustion (Metallic)
Metal + O2 → Metal Oxide
A Synthesis reaction
O2 always a reactant
