Why did MOA attract sympathy after the act of Accord 1460?

  • Because the act disinherited her son.

Revival of the Queen’s fortunes after the Act of Accord:

  • MOA began to gather an army in the north - more sympathy for her.

  • Also, Northumberland and Clifford controlled the north and were busy attacking Neville and York properties.

  • York, Salisbury and Rutland headed north December 1460 to try and deal with the problems there.

Battle of Wakefield December 30th 1460:

  • York, Salisbury and Rutland were hunting on December 30th 1460 when they were set upon by larger Lancastrian force and killed.

  • The three Yorkists were killed by Northumberland, Somerset and Clifford - revenge for their fathers at St Albans.

  • York’s head was displayed at York wearing a paper crown.

  • York’s eldest son - Edward, earl of march became duke of York.

Battle of Mortimer’s Cross, February 2nd 1461:

  • Earl of Wiltshire lands in south Wales in early 1461 with troops from Ireland, France and Brittany. He was headed for Hereford.

  • In battle, Owen Tudor captured and executed in Hereford - Jasper Tudor and Wiltshire managed to escape.

  • Edward gained prestige for winning his first battle.

The queen’s northern host:

  • MOA’s northern host headed for London.

  • After defeat of Warwick at 2nd battle of St Albans, Bonville executed, Henry VI falls into Lancastrian hands.

  • MOA diverts her army to Dunstable after her victory instead of heading to London because she feared her army may ransack London and turn the city further against her.

  • Tactical error - allowed York to enter the city first.

Edward Duke of York:

  • Edward received warm welcome when he entered London on February 26th 1461 with Warwick.

  • Edward was 18 and 6ft 4.

  • 3rd and 4th of March, 1461 A Council consisting of Warwick, Norfolk and the ABC decided that Edward should become king.

  • 4th = Edward publically proclaimed King at Westminster.
