Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
A routing protocol used between routing domains, primarily between ISPs, on the Internet.
Autonomous System (AS)
A collection of IP networks and routers under the control of one organization that presents a common routing policy to the Internet.
EIGRP
Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol, used for routing within a single autonomous system.
OSPF
Open Shortest Path First, another routing protocol for communications between routers within a single routing domain.
Autonomous System Numbers (ASN)
Numbers allocated to ISPs by IANA for identification of their Autonomous Systems.
Network Layer Reachability Information (NLRI)
Classless network prefixes used by BGP for routing.
BGP path selection metrics
Metrics used by BGP for path selection, including hop count, weight, local preference, origin, and community.
BGP convergence
The process by which BGP settles on a stable route selection after a change in the network.
BGP TCP port
BGP operates over TCP on port 179.
IANA
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, responsible for the global coordination of the Internet Protocol address space.
Under which of the following circumstances might you implement BGP on your company network and share routes with internet routers?
If the network is connected to the Internet using multiple ISPs
