Osteon (Haversian system)
The whole circular unit of compact bone.
Central (Haversian) canal
The central canal that runs through the osteon and contains blood vessels and nerves.
Lamellae
Concentric rings around the central canal, like tree rings.
Lacunae
Tiny spaces within the lamellae that house osteocytes.
Canaliculi
Small channels connecting lacunae for nutrient and waste exchange.
Perforating (Volkmann's) canals
Canals that run perpendicular to osteons and connect them.
Interstitial lamellae
Leftover lamellae filling gaps between osteons.
