Fertile Crescent
A crescent-shaped region in the Middle East with rich, fertile soil that made early agriculture possible.
Silt
Fine, nutrient-rich soil left behind on riverbanks after a flood, perfect for growing crops.
Irrigation
Human-made systems (like canals, dikes, and ditches) used to channel river water directly to crops.
Polytheism
The belief in or worship of more than one god.
Specialization of Labor
When people specialize in specific jobs (like blacksmithing, weaving, or pottery) because farming creates a surplus of food.
Cuneiform
The world’s first system of writing, developed by the Sumerians using wedge-shaped marks pressed into soft clay tablets.
Ziggurat
A massive, stepped pyramid-like temple built at the center of Mesopotamian city-states to honor their gods.
Hammurabi’s Code
One of the earliest written laws in history, created by King Hammurabi of Babylon; famous for its strict "an eye for an eye" philosophy.
Pharaoh
A political ruler of Ancient Egypt who was also worshipped as an earthly god.
Hieroglyphics
The ancient Egyptian writing system that used pictures and symbols to represent sounds and words.
Papyrus
A reed plant that grows along the Nile, processed into a paper-like material for writing.
Theocracy
A form of government in which the political ruler is also considered a religious leader (or god).
Grid System
An organized urban plan where streets intersect at right angles, showing advanced civic planning in cities like Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro.
Monsoon
Seasonal winds that bring heavy rains to the Indian subcontinent, which early farmers relied on to water their crops.
Mandate of Heaven
The belief that Chinese emperors were granted the right to rule by the gods, but could lose that right if they were corrupt or unfit.
Dynastic Cycle
The rise, fall, and replacement of ruling families (dynasties) in Chinese history.
Oracle Bones
Animal bones or turtle shells carved with questions, heated until they cracked, and interpreted by priests to predict the future (the earliest form of Chinese writing).
Ancestor Veneration
The practice of honoring deceased family members through rituals, believing their spirits could bring good or bad fortune to the living.
