VO2 Max
The maximum volume of oxygen that an individual can utilize during intense exercise, an indicator of aerobic fitness.
Aerobic Exercise
Physical activity that relies on the use of oxygen for energy production, typically involving prolonged, moderate intensity effort.
Anaerobic Threshold
The exercise intensity at which lactic acid begins to accumulate in the muscles faster than it can be removed.
Lactic Acid
A byproduct of anaerobic metabolism, produced when glucose is broken down for energy in the absence of oxygen.
Efficiency in Exercise
The amount of work done per unit of energy consumed; higher efficiency means more work is done with less energy.
Biomechanics
The science that deals with the mechanical aspects of living organisms, often applied in sports to enhance performance.
Cardiovascular Fitness
The ability of the heart, lungs, and vascular system to deliver oxygen to muscles during sustained physical activity.
Interval Training
A training technique that involves alternating short bursts of intense activity with periods of rest or lower intensity.
Energy Systems
Different pathways that the body uses to produce ATP during various types of physical activity, including aerobic and anaerobic systems.
Ventilatory Threshold
The exercise intensity at which breathing rate increases disproportionately to the increase in exercise intensity.
Muscle Fiber Recruitment
The process of activating muscle fibers to produce movement, with slow twitch fibers recruited at lower intensities and fast twitch at higher intensities.
Hydrogen Ions
Particles released during the breakdown of glucose that can contribute to acidification of the muscles and fatigue during intense exercise.
Sports Technology
Innovations in equipment, clothing, and gear designed to enhance athletic performance and efficiency.
Fitness Testing
Assessments used to measure various aspects of physical fitness, including VO2 max, lactate threshold, and muscular endurance.
Cognitive Fatigue
The mental strain that can accompany physical exertion, potentially affecting performance during prolonged exercise.
