Daily nutrient level estimated to meet the requirements of 50% of the healthy individuals for each age group and gender.
Recommended Dietary Intake (RDI)
Average daily dietary intake level sufficient to meet the nutrient requiremnets of 97-98% of healthy individuals for each age group and gender
Adequate Intake (AI)
The average daily dietary intake level based on observed or experimentally determined appropriate estimates of nutrient intake by group/s of healthy individuals for each age, group, and gender.
Used when there’s insufficient information to determine RDI.
Upper Level of Intake (UL)
Highest average daily intake that does not pose adverse health effects on almost all individuals in the general population.

What is iron?

Iron function
Production of oxygen-transporting proteins: haemoglobin (RBCs) and myoglobin (muscles)
Production of collagen, some hormones, neurotransmitters, and amino acids
iron cycle
Transferrin carries iron in blood → (some iron delivered to myoglobin of muscle cells) → bone marrow incorporates iron into haemoglobin of RBCs and stores excess iron in ferritin → iron-containing haemoglobin in RBCs carries oxygen (some losses if bleeding occurs eg period) → liver and spleen dismantle RBCs, packages iron into transferrin and stores excess iron in ferritin.

Non-Haem iron: wholegrain cereals, legumes, leafy green vegetables, firm tofu, and nuts
iron absorption
5-35% absorbed from food.
Haem: more easily absorbed than non-Haem
Absorption enhanced by: Meat Fish Poultry Factor (MFP), Vit c from plants, gastric acidity
Absorption inhibited by: phytates in legumes, whole grains, and rice
Oxalates in dark leafy greens

Emerged as result of WW2: starvation and deficiencies
FBDGs history 1950-60s
Only 9 countries had dietary guidelines..
Still focused on micronutrient deficiencies, reflected nutritional science and knowledge of nutrition at the time.
FBDGs history 1970-80s
Research established links between overconsumption of specific nutrients and chronic diseases.
Translation into policy is slow- didn’t start influencing dietary guidelines until then.
Guidelines still primarily focused on avoiding micronutrient deficiencies, but also included overconsumption of nutrients.
